Matte lipsticks are extremely on trend at the moment, with nearly every brand having their own version. The Kylie Jenner lips are all over instagram however the trouble with some matte liquid lipsticks is that sometimes they can leave your lips dry, cracked and flaky.
I have learned some tips and tricks to get the perfect instagram pout without the dreaded chapped lips.
It is extremely important to prepare your lips by getting rid of all the dead, dry skin, as matte lipsticks have a tendency to emphasise any dryness. This also enables a really smooth application of the product. I personally only do this as needed or before a special event. There are a number of products on the market that you can buy, however, I think its much easier to just go into your kitchen. It is extremely easy to make your own DIY lip scrub using some sugar with olive oil or coconut oil (my favourite). All you need to do is gently massage this in circular motions and rinse off.
It is really important to regularly moisturise your lips regardless of whether you wear lipsticks or not. There are so many great affordable lip balms out there, some with even SPF. I personally use the Burt’s Bees Beeswax Lip Balm that comes in tin or the Chapstick 3 in 1 with SPF. I use the Burt’s Bees product overnight as a way of conditioning and hydrating my lips. It is one of my holy grail lip products as not only is it inexpensive but also long lasting. I use the Chapstick 3 in 1, everyday as it is really long wearing.
Another way of preventing dry and cracked lips, is to apply a little bit of lip balm or moisturiser onto your lips BEFORE applying your matte lipstick. I know it seems a little counterintuitive but, it acts like a primer.
Blanking out the natural colour of your lips using your foundation or concealer, not only makes the colour of the lipstick pop, but also allows you to create a defined line between your complexion and the colour of your lipstick. Definitely not an essential tip, but on special occasions it makes the look just a little more flawless.
I can’t explain why, but lip liner increases the longevity of your lipstick as well as preventing bleeding and feathering of the colour. You can use any shade similar to the shade of lipstick to outline your lips. It creates a more defined look and neat result. I also tend to fill in the majority of my lips as well just for a better look and to prevent patchiness.
Application of the Lipstick
I tend to use the applicator of the lipstick, mainly because I am lazy but also because I already create a perfect outline by using the lip liner. You can create a nice finish using a lip brush too.
One of the tips I have found that makes lipstick last longer is to not rub your lips together and let the product dry. It just means that your not going to move the product elsewhere and have it dry patchy.
Last Minute Touch Up
If you want the perfect Kylie Jenner look, the last thing to do, is take a little bit of your concealer or foundation on a brush or a q-tip and apply the product around the outside of your lips. This helps to cover up any mistakes and also just creates more defined lips. This last tip isn’t absolutely necessary, but once your start, you won’t be able to go without it! I use some concealer like the MAC Pro Longwear Concealer on a flat concealer brush or the Anastasia Beverly Hills Pro Pencil.
