I think I speak for everyone when I say that we have been waiting for Kylie Cosmetics to release highlighters since the dawn of time. Well, maybe not that long ago, but definitely since Kylie teased the idea of products other than lipsticks a while ago! Finally, we have the Kylighters, Kylie Cosmetics’ answer to our glow problems. These highlighters were so incredibly hard to get at the first release, so I only have 4 to swatch and I will be making my judgements based on these four shades. If you are interested in my Kylie Cosmetics Kylighter review, then keep reading below!
Kylie Cosmetics Kylighters Review
The packaging of these Kylighters keeps true to the vibe of the current Kylie Cosmetics packaging. The highlighter comes in a glossy outer carton that is a similar shade to the highlighter itself. They have Kylie embossed on the outside, in a similar shade but it is matte, so it is very subtle. As always, all the ingredients etc, are listed on the back.
The Kylighters themselves are made out if thick cardboard and have a magnetic closure. They each have a mirror which is a nice touch for travel. The Kylighters also have a good weight to it and feel expensive.
The Kylighters are sold exclusively on the Kylie Cosmetics website for $22USD. International shipping is generally $14.95USD, but you may encounter customs charges depending on your country.
Each highlighter has 0.34 oz or 9.5 g of product. When compared to another high-end brand highlighters such as the Anastasia Beverly Hills illuminators which are $28USD for 0.32 oz or the Becca Cosmetics highlighters that are $38USD for 0.28 oz, you definitely are getting a better deal.
These Kylighters are pressed illuminating powders that are buildable coverage. Even though they are powder, they almost have a creamy/velvet-like feel to them. They are not dry powders. The quality is actually very good. They do not settle into any fine lines or exaggerate pores etc.
In terms of pigmentation, these Kylighters are not intensely pigmented in one swipe, however, I personally really like this as you can intensify the pigmentation and you have more control (I’ll get into this in a bit more detail further down in my review). There was a little bit of variation between the shades. The shades Banana Split and French Vanilla air on the subtle side of pigmentation while the shades Chocolate Cherry and Strawberry Shortcake were more intense. You can build up the coverage and therefore the pigmentation, and also Mac Fix Plus spray can further intensify the highlight if that is what you are going for!
What I like about this formula, is that they are not glittery or shimmery in any way, they just give a nice sheen and glow without being too over the top.
They apply really smoothly to the skin and blend really well. I found that the results will depend on the type of brush you use.
If you are wanting a more subtle look, you can definitely use a fan brush like the Sigma F42 Fan Brush, as I found this to diffuse the product and blend it nicely.
My personal favourite highlighter brush is the F03 High Cheekbone Highlighter Brush because it is great for applying and blending highlight. It also lets you pick up more product than a fan brush. I feel like I have more control with this sort of brush.
As previously mentioned, a quick spritz of the Mac Fix Plus Spray on your brush before dipping into the pan can further intensify your highlight! You can always then use a damp beauty blender to tone it down if you go OTT.
There are currently 6 shades.
French Vanilla – Soft icy gold
Banana Split – Vibrant yellow gold
Cotton Candy Cream – Soft light peach
Salted Caramel – Warm mid tone gold
Strawberry Shortcake – Warm mid tone pink
Chocolate Cherry – Warm coppery bronze
Who are these for?
If you are someone like me, who likes a subtle glow without any glitter, then these are perfect for you. I love that they are not intensely pigmented because it means I will get more wear out of them. For me its not always appropriate to have a blinding highlight all the time.
If you are someone who likes your highlight to be seen from space, then these probably are not for you. You can find more intensely pigmented highlighters such as the Becca highlighters or the ABH Glow Kits, that are also great quality.
I am really happy with the quality and formula of these Kylighters, I can’t wait to get the two shades I ordered, Salted Caramel and Cotton Candy Cream! I saw on Instagram that many people were disappointed with the subtlety of these highlighters but for me, I really like that you are in control of how intense you want it.
