Kylie Cosmetics has one of my favourite liquid lipstick formulas! I love their Matte Lip Kits as they last all day! Although I don’t have overly sensitive lips, on days where my lips are chapped/dry to begin with, matte lipsticks can be a little bit drying. I was super excited when I heard of the release of the new Kylie Cosmetics Velvet Lip Kits, a more hydrating formula! I purchased all four shades and wanted to review the Kylie Cosmetics Velvet Liquid Lipsticks for you! Let’s get into the review!!!
Kylie Cosmetics Velvet Liquid Lipsticks Review
The products are shipped in a sleek black box and wrapped within foam. Within the box is also a new printed card with a note from Kylie. The note says “We’re going velvet! hope you love this new formula! XOXO Kylie “.
The Velvet Liquid Lipsticks come similarly packaged to the Matte Lip Kits. They are packaged in a white box with the signature lip logo, depicting the shade within. Within the box comes a liquid lipstick, as well as a matching lip liner. The only difference between the Velvet and Matte Lip Kits is just that it says Velvet instead of Matte.
The applicator is a standard doe foot applicator and is the same as the matte lip kits. It is nice and firm, which easily enables you to create sharp lip lines
The Velvet Lip Kits are sold exclusively on the Kylie Cosmetics website for $27USD. International shipping is generally $14.95USD. You may find that these liquid lipsticks are a higher price point when comparing them to other brands, however, you do receive a matching lip liner. To put this in perspective, if you compared this with another higher price point brand such as MAC, you would expect to pay around $16.50 for a lip liner alone.
I feel that the formula does justify the price point. I absolutely adore the formula of the lip liners and love that they come together in one kit.
The lipsticks have a very sweet vanilla type scent, that you either love or hate. I do not mind the scent at all and I do find that after the lipstick dries down, it becomes unnoticeable.
They currently have 4 shades.
Charm – dusty pink rose shade
Harmony – warm mid-tone pink shade
Dazzle – warm terracotta shade
Rosie – warm deep rose shade
These liquid lipsticks have a creamy, almost moussey consistency and the formula is slighter thicker than the matte version. They glide onto the lips effortlessly and smoothly. They are very pigmented in one layer and could be used without a lipliner.
They actually feel velvety and almost semi-matte. They do dry down in a couple of minutes to a very comfortable finish. When you press your lips together, it isn’t dry nor is it tacky, it is just a very comfortable wear. Pressing your lips together doesn’t cause the formula to move around at all either.
The formula doesn’t sink into any of your lip lines or exaggerate any lines or dry patches. It almost creates a hydrated mask over the top, that makes your lips look soft and hydrated.
These lipsticks are just so comfortable to wear. When I wear non-matte lipsticks I am usually quite conscious of them on my lips, however, with these Velvet Liquid Lipsticks, you do forget that they are on!
They are not transfer proof. If you drink from a coffee cup, for example, some lipstick will transfer, however, it is not noticeable in terms of patchiness on the lips at all. In fact, I tested this further, by kissing the back of my hand to see how much product transferred. After several times, a small amount transferred each time, however, it was an even fade on the lips, and there still was reasonable coverage!
They are not smudge proof. If you scratch the top of your lip, some product will transfer, however, you can easily just wipe it off. The smudges are not hard to remove.
As far as lasting power goes for a non-matte, these lipsticks are very long lasting! You will be able to get away with light eating and drinking, and the results still looking near perfect. If you have an oily meal, however, it will begin to fade, but the fade is even and would be most noticeable with the darkest shade.
Who is this formula for?
If you are someone who has stayed away from matte lipsticks because of their drying properties, I think you will absolutely love these!
If you are someone who has drier lips or has more natural lip lines, these are perfect for you! They won’t dry your lips or emphasize any lip lines or dry spots.
Quick comparison to the Colourpop Ultra Satin Formula
There has been a lot of discussion as to whether the Kylie Cosmetics Velvet Liquid Lipsticks are similar to the Colourpop Satin formula which is only $6. I think that the difference in formula is definitely reflected within the price. I own both formulas and really like them. Personally, I find that the Kylie Cosmetics formula is more comfortable and you honestly forget you are wearing it, whereas, with the Colourpop, I am more conscious of them when I wear them.
The consistency is very different too. Colourpop Satins are more creamy and silky, whereas the Kylie Cosmetics Velvet Lip Kits feel velvet-like and semi matte.
I am actually obsessed with this formula! It takes on the best aspects of both matte and cream liquid lipstick formulas. It is hydrating and comfortable like a cream lipstick but dries down to a comfortable finish that you forget you are wearing, like a matte. I cannot wait for Kylie Cosmetics to release more of the Velvet Liquid Lipsticks! I would love to see some nude shades in this formula!!!.
