As a part of the Holiday 2016 Collection, Kylie Cosmetics released their first makeup brushes! I am obsessed with brushes, so I was really keen to try these out and see the quality of this set! Although this set was limited edition, knowing what we know about Kylie Cosmetics, they will most likely release a whole bunch of brushes as a part of their permanent collection soon!
Kylie Cosmetics Brushes Review
The brushes are packaged in a white drawstring bag made out of a soft fleece type material, with Kylie in silver, matching the rest of the holiday collection. The brushes themselves come individually packaged in plastic and come with a plastic brush guard, which keeps their shape and can be useful when travelling. Unlike the typical black brushes, these are white and definitely stand out!
This set retailed for $35USD from the Kylie Cosmetics website. Within the set are 5 eye makeup brushes, which you could conclude are $7USD each. In comparison to other brush brands, this price point would fall into the affordable category, considering that brands like Real Techniques have eye brushes for around $6.
The brushes are quite light in weight, but in saying that they don’t feel cheap. On the back of the brushes, it does state that they are made in China. The fibres are synthetic fibres and are quite soft. Each brush has a varying degree of flexibility for its intended purpose, which I’ll touch upon below.
In my brush collection, I do have other brushes that are better quality, however, their price may be 2 to even 3 times more expensive. For the price of these Kylie Cosmetics brushes, the quality is justified, if not better than what you would expect at this price point.
The one thing that made me cringe about these brushes was the possibility of washing the white fibres. Would they stain or would they go back to their clean whiteness?
I found that these brushes washed extremely well, with no fallout and the brushes maintained their shape!
When I wash my brushes I use the Sigma Spa Mat with the Sigma SigMagic Brush Shampoo. These are actually lifesavers and have made the whole process of cleaning brushes so much easier. These products restored these dirty white brushes back to their original perfect state! Sigma has a discount code “SIGMA2017” for 10% off. This isn’t a discount code for myself, but if you do use the links above, they are my affiliate link. No pressure, though! Even if you don’t use my link, definitely check these out! The brush mat, in particular, is something I wish I had purchased sooner, and they have a whole heap of brush mats, even little hand held ones.
Kylie Cosmetics Brushes Individual Review
Large Fluffy Blending Brush
This is a pretty soft large blending brush that tapers down in a V shape. I love the shape and flexibility of this brush I think this brush does pick up product well and blend very nicely. This brush could do with more fibres to make it a little fluffier and denser, but that could just be personal preference!
Tapered Defining Brush
This is a short pencil brush perfect for fine details. It is quite stiff but it was nice for highlighting the inner corner and deepening the outer corner of the eye.
Medium Rounded Blending Brush
This is a medium sized blending brush that is really soft and flexible. The brush is pinched at the bottom, so it does fit quite nicely in the crease. This is probably my favourite brush in the set.
Flat Rounded Edge Shader
This is a typical shade brush. I initially thought it was quite stiff, but after the first wash, they became a little softer. It picks the product up quite nicely and applies it nicely to the eye.
Short Flat Brush
This is a really short and stiff shader brush. The Kylie Cosmetics website stated it was for smudging the under eye, but I found it way too stiff for this use. I didn’t think it was suitable for that purpose so I tried this brush to pick up the Kylie Creme Shadows and it worked perfectly. It didn’t eat up any of the product and applied it well to the lid!
Overall, I think this brush set is great for someone starting out in makeup. It definitely includes the essentials! If you are someone who already owns similar brushes to these, I don’t think you would need to run out and get this set, not unless you were looking to expand your collection. I do like these brushes for their price, and I’m looking forward to seeing which brushes Kylie Cosmetics comes out with next!
